     BODABODA CYCLISTS TO WEAR UNIFORMS

Bodabodas have been highly blamed for causing accidents in the city and generally country wide. In an interview held with the public relations officer Kampala metropolitan as well as a police officer Central police Station-Kampala, Mr. Henry Karuru, bodabodas seem to have claimed many people’s lives in this country.” We are working closely with cyclists to ensure they observe traffic rules”Mr Karuru said.

He attributed the causes of accidents to reckless riding of boda boda cyclists, failure to respect traffic rules and overloading. He also said that passengers who refuse to wear helmets also cause road accidents.

“All motorcycle riders are supposed to wear reflector jackets” he added.

He also said that passengers should carry with them some small pieces of clothes to tie in their heads before wearing helmets in order to avoid the spread of diseases.

However, the issue of wearing helmets remained in question whether passengers should always carry their helmets or bodaboda cyclists will provide. “Passengers should provide their own helmets, if they can’t afford, then they find other means of transport” Karuru added.

He said the police are deployed at every traffic light to observe whoever rides poorly. He also said that bodaboda riders are in disciplined, disorganized, and impatient.

He also said that those who do not want to do as they are expected will always be charged and punished according to the motorcycle rules and regulations of 2004.

“Those who violet the rules pay fine that always ranges from 40,000sh to 80,000 depending on the offence committed”
